Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Could Zymox Otic medication be used to maintain and prevent infection?

A: Zymox Otic is intended to treat a broad range of infections ranging from mild to severe, but many veterinarians also claim Zymox Otic to be effective in maintenance of the ears especially during the allergy season. This in turn brings up another important issue, that is, only an enzyme system could be used continually and yet be just as effective against all types of bacteria, fungus and yeast as when it was used the first time. If you tried this with an antibiotic medication, those smart little germs would mutate themselves and become resistant. When they're up against the 3-point enzyme system found in Zymox Otic, resistance becomes impossible. Zymox enzymes win every time.

Q: What can I use to clean my pet's ears before I treat him with Zymox Otic?

A: You should not use any other ear preparations during treatment Zymox Otic because the enzyme activity that is present could become interrupted. Use of an ear cleanser is allowed following treatment for maintenance.

Q: Is it necessary that I use Zymox medicated shampoo before applying the Zymox medicated rinse, or can I use the shampoo that I already have?

A: Zymox rinse is effective because of its live enzyme activity which provides a protective antibacterial coating on the fur and skin. Zymox medicated shampoo is necessary in treatment with the rinse because it contains no harsh detergents, pesticides, colorings or residual petroleum products. These and other harsh surfactants could do harm to the live enzymes that are already at work. The Zymox shampoo also contains Lactoperoxidise, Lactoferrin, and Lysozyme which kill off bacteria during the cleansing process. The Zymox rinse has also a residual effect to continue enzyme activity after application.

Q: Could I use Zymox shampoo and rinse to treat hot spots and itching caused from fleas?

A: If there is an infection resulting from the affected area, then we would suggest Zymox medicated shampoo. If there is not an infection due to the hot spots, then we recommend that you use an over the counter product targeted to treat hot spots and fleas.
